Welcome to Myrtle Beach, where the cranberries, sheep, and cattle outnumber the people.

Carl’s Crab Shack

Carl’s Crab Shack is where Will spends most of his time. Grab your favorite lure, rent a boat to go crabbing, or hire a guide for hunting or fishing. Enter

The Skillet

The only restaurant in town is run out of an old single-wide manufactured home that’s been remodeled several times. Enter

The Market

Grab your eggs, milk, and bread, but most people love their famous hot dogs. Want one of your own? Enter

Myrtle Creek Coffee Company

Want a good cup of coffee, a place to chat with friends–or anyone who comes in? Don’t like coffee or can’t handle the caffeine? That’s okay, there’s chai and hot chocolate, or as Ana likes to do blend the two to make a chocolate chai! Yes, this is based on a real place as well. Floras Creek Coffee Company is open most days 7:30-1:00.

Bed & Breakfasts

There are two places to spend the night in Myrtle Beach–Aidan’s Keep or Seashore B&B. Harley’s folks run Aidan’s Keep out of their homes. This causes Harley no end of issues if he forgets to clean up after himself. The Seashore B&B is down the road. The two work together to house the tourists that come by Myrtle Beach.

Myrtle Lake

The lake is located north of town and is known for kite-surfing, windsurfing, and wonderful hiking. Enter

White Cape Point

Home to White Cape Municipal Airport, cross-country trails, and many have their farms along this point. The White Cape Airport was used during World War II. At the far end of the point across from the airport entrance are the cross-country trails. The kids run these trails in the fall. Harley knows the trails best, but Ana also has run them. Also based in reality. If you’re on the Southern Oregon Coast, feel free to check out Blacklock Point.

Cranberry Farms

Cranberry farming is a rare thing in the United States. Wisconsin, Maine, and the Southern Oregon Coast. Learn about where your cranberries come from. Enter

Schools

With such a small community, there are only two schools in Myrtle Beach. Myrtle Beach Elementary and Junior High School and Myrtle Beach High School. The elementary and junior high school are in one building in the town south. The kids ride the bus to school or if they live in town, they can walk. The junior high students travel to the high school at the end of the day for their electives and PE.

Mr. Behr, named after Jo Marsh’s Mr. Behr in Little Women and Little Men, is inspired by a real teacher who retired from the Port Orford/Langlois school district. He taught both math and science, and did have parents’ phone numbers and called them when their children had missing assignments. He loved the kids and made his subjects come alive.

Miss Smith, is the Language Arts teacher at Myrtle Beach Junior High School. She used to teach kindergarten but now is a junior high teacher due to budget cuts. She’s inspired by two different teachers. One is still teaching at Port Orford/Langlois school district, but instead of moving from kindergarten to junior high, she went from junior high to first grade teacher. The other was my first grade teacher, Miss Smith, who then went on to teach college students how to teach. When I was in her college classroom management class, she demonstrated a technique. As soon as I heard that voice, I was no longer a college student but a first grader who was in trouble! Thanks, Miss Smith for all your input in my life.
