The cover of your book is the first thing your reader sees–and yes, judges your book by. (I have one review that says the reader almost didn’t read it because of the cover!)
My, at the time, 17-year-old son said that the YA books were what he was drawn to in a library because the books gave a window into the world. I’ve kept that idea over the past ten years as I’ve published and worked with artists to create my covers. His advice has held true as people are constantly drawn into my vendor booth because of the covers.
