My mom painted a wooden cube as a block for a step-stool and shared her love of crafting with me. From cereal-box Barbie beds to crocheting and eventually quilting, I’ve done a lot. What better time for crafts than the holidays when you can do them with family?

Dragon Egg Ornament

This one may end up as a plain dragon egg in my office, but I’m sure I’ll be making it with my almost four-year-old granddaughter. It looks easy and fun.

What you’ll need:

  • string, yarn, or ribbon to make it an ornament
  • foil
  • air dry clay or cornstarch and white glue
  • straw or other object to make indents
  • paint
  • glitter or gem stickers (I have both from my dragon outfit for Realm Makers this year!)

Instructions:

Make a loop with the string, yarn, or ribbon and tie it off. Then using your foil, shape an egg around the end of the string. Mold your air dry clay around the foil, make indents or designs with a straw or paperclip. Let it dry. Paint and then add your glitter or stickers.

Dragon Ornaments

This is a salt dough recipe that you use to create dragons. Unfortunately, to do so, you’ll need a template or be able to draw dragons on dough really well. However, I can link to some templates to use.

You’ll need:

  • paper template
  • 3 cups of flour
  • 1 cup cinnamon or cocoa powder
  • 1 cup salt
  • 1 -1 1/2 cups hot water

Instructions:

Mix it all together and then roll it out. Some websites said to use parchment paper. I like that idea because I don’t like messes! To help with not burning make sure that it’s all one thickness. Once it’s rolled out, cut out your dragons and use a pencil or some other round object to poke a hole for the string to hang it up with. Then bake. Wait until it’s cooled and paint and string to hang up.

Baking:

There were various instructions. If you like them to puff up, then bake at 325 F for about an hour–keeping watch that it doesn’t get too dark. If you want them flat, then poke the bottom of them with a fork and bake at 250 F for about two hours. You want them hard but not burnt.

Let me know if you create something fun. I’d love to see your art.

Interview with a Dragon Rider https://kandijwyatt.com/interview-with-a-dragon-rider/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=interview-with-a-dragon-rider Sat, 03 Jun 2023 16:46:06 +0000 https://kandijwyatt.com/?p=9717 Social media has its ups and downs. Last month, I received a message request, but instead of being the kind that says “I see you’d make a great person to rep my product”, it was a message saying he was a middle grade author and would love to help spread the word about dragon stories. Of course, I said yes! It’s dragons!

In the process, I was able to read The Search for Synergy by Brett Salter and really enjoyed it. The story’s based in real-life United States with junior high boys (things I relate to), but the difference is that King Arthur’s knights were really dragon riders, and their descendants carry on that heritage!

img="Julian Rider from The Search for Synergy, middle grade urban fantasy by Brett Salter"

Interview with Julian

Hey guys.  My name is Julian “Danger” Rider.  Rome calls me Jules as a nickname.  And my sister Camela always groans after she says my name, so I guess that’s her nickname for me.  You know,  Julian (exaggerated groan)

I’m a natural blonde.  And my eyes are blue.  My mom says they’re perfect.

What kind of distinguishing facial features do you have?

Hmmm.  Nothing really.  I just have a face, ya know?  But it’s great because it’s mine!  I do have a characteristic smirk which I am still trying to have patented.

Do you have a birthmark? Where is it? What about scars? How did you get them?

That is a really personal question.  But yeah, I have a “V” on my forehead that shows up when I get really angry.  The rest of the time, you can’t even see it.  And I have my Synergy Scars on my hand since I’ve performed The Great Synergy with Rome.

Who are your friends and family? Who do you surround yourself with? Who are the people you’re the closest to? Who do you wish you were closest to?

Well, my brother is Rome.  And we don’t have the same parents, but since we did The Great Synergy, we are as close as brother.  Closer, even.  Like soulmates!  And then, my bratty sister is Camela and my dad is the former Grand Hunter.  Umm.  I hang out with Rome and the crazy, local librarian, Mr. Jones.  Together, we are trying to save the world from the Darkbrands.  I’d like to be friends with The Rock.

Where do you go when you’re angry?

I usually try to find Rome and have him calm me down.  Since we share the same heart, he knows my every thought.  He is the dude that can help me out when I’m angry.  And he is a fire dragon.  He knows rage!

Do you have a secret?

I mean, I kinda just told you.  Haha.  But other than that, I am secretly bonded to a fire dragon in human disguise and we go all over the planet shutting down portals and fighting monsters from another dimension.  How’s that for a secret!

You’re doing intense spring cleaning. What is easy for you to throw out?

Naw, dude.  I’m not throwing anything out.  But, I would throw away all my sister’s stuff while she’s away at prep school.  Hehehehe.

What is one strong memory that has stuck with you from childhood?

I’ll never forget the time my dad sat me down and told me about the “true” history of our world.  The history about dragons and The Great Synergy and all about King Arthur’s Camelot.  It really sticks out to me because I remember thinking, “I can’t wait to get a dragon!!”Because having a dragon to bond with is just about the coolest thing on the planet.

What did you think of Julian? If you like him, you’ll probably love Rome, the fire dragon in disguise.

Brand New Book–An Unexpected Adventure https://kandijwyatt.com/an-unexpected-adventure-new-release/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=an-unexpected-adventure-new-release https://kandijwyatt.com/an-unexpected-adventure-new-release/#comments Tue, 25 Sep 2018 12:10:06 +0000 http://kandijwyatt.com/?p=7199 Three years ago, I started on a journey that I had no clue what it would bring. I may have been excited about putting the Dragon Courage series out into the publishing realm, but little did I imagine I’d have ten books published with another three written and waiting their turn to be published. The story of An Unexpected Adventure started three years ago with the release of Dragon’s Future

The impetus for the book

Back in the fall of 2015, I was teaching my first year in a school I loved to be at. It’s where three of my five kids had graduated and all five have attended. I wanted to be there and couldn’t have been happier. Dragon’s Future had just released, and I was given the freedom to add books to my list of to-be-published with my publisher. I began to dream. What could I do?

One day returning from Coos Bay, the town an hour north of us, I crossed the Coquille River and had the thought of what would happen if a dragon flew down the river.

The Coquille River Lighthouse. It could use a dragon, couldn’t it?

That brought about an idea of a story based in my area. Now, I just needed more information.

The Characters

At the same time four students stood out to me as I taught. Two of them were sixth graders in my study hall class, and two were eighth graders in my Spanish class. The four didn’t really know each other, and I really only knew them from class and didn’t know their families. However, the more I interacted with them at school, the more I wondered if I wrote them into a story if they’d read it.

Harley

The inspiration for Harley came from a student that went to church with me. I knew his family, and he was open about what they enjoyed or didn’t enjoy. Although the physical description of Harley is from that student, Harley really is a blend of the student and my own son.

The B&B is from a dream my husband and I have to one day run one. The photography that Harley’s dad does is because my husband is a photographer. Harley’s mom is probably more characteristically me.

Will

During study hall, the other student sat quietly and drew. He didn’t say much. While in Spanish class, he brought me to tears when he brought in a shell from a WWII ship. All I really knew about him was he had a kind heart and what he looked like. So, Will’s character evolved based on that.

It wasn’t until later that I realized that the inspiration for Will had very kind, and humorous, parents who are involved in his life. Whereas, Will in the books has very unengaged parents.

Chase

The inspiration for Chase came from an eighth grader who embodied the stereotypical Oregon boy. He was raised on a farm up the river, went hunting and fishing, and his dad logged. His roots showed in how he dressed and talked. However, he also seemed to get put down for his heritage. So, I wanted to honor the basis of life here in our area–hunting, fishing, and logging. In so doing, I created Chase’s dad–the hard-working, get-up-early logger.

Cherise

The inspiration for Cherise was a very talkative girl in my Spanish class. She worked with the student who inspired Chase. It wasn’t until about half-way through the semester that the kids tried to tell me that the student never spoke in any of her other classes. I couldn’t believe it! She proved to me she could go a whole class period without saying a word. However, Cherise has the same characteristics I saw in this student while she was in my class. Her love for her dog comes into play later in the series, and I received permission to add him into book three.

The Cover

You’ve seen the cover, but I’m so excited about it. You see, I got to go out with three of those students to do the photo session for the stock photos. I was given permission from their parents to use them on the cover! So, we have Will, Harley, and Chase (from left to right). Unfortunately, the student who inspired Cherise had moved away and couldn’t make it back for the session.

What people are saying about the book

One Amazon reviewer gave the book five stars.

“An Unexpected Adventure, for me, turned into an unexpected delight. Kandi Wyatt manages to mix reality and fantasy in perfect proportions in this tale.”

Where to get your copy

4 Fascinating Answers For Did Dragons Really Exist https://kandijwyatt.com/4-fascinating-answers-for-did-dragons-really-exist/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=4-fascinating-answers-for-did-dragons-really-exist Mon, 16 Jan 2017 21:17:26 +0000 http://kandijwyatt.com/?p=3954 Dragons. The word evokes different images–from the serpent-like creature of Asia to the winged giant of Europe, from wisdom and wealth bringer to knights battling fierce beasts. Every fantasy lover knows of the creature as do religious people. While fantasy lovers have longed to ride a dragon or have fought an imaginary one in a role-playing game, religious minded people either wish to avoid dragons or seek them for guidance. The question remains, “Did dragons really exist?”

Over the next several months, I’ll explore different aspects of this question. Each month, I’ll have a post exploring in more detail one of the points from today’s blog. Make sure you check back in to find out more information on this need-to-know question.

How do we go about answering a question when there doesn’t seem to be any proof that the creatures exist today? The most obvious answer to that is to look back at history. No, there are no fossil records of dragons per se, but the creatures have left their mark elsewhere.

<img="dragon logo, author Kandi J Wyatt">

Dragons across cultures

It seems as if every single culture has a dragon myth or story. Asia is the most prevalent with the year of the dragon and their New Year celebrations with snake-like dragons weaving their way down streets. Europe, however, took a different twist on dragons. They showcase large winged creatures that breathe fire and hoard gold.

If something exists across cultures, then generally there is a grain of truth in the tale. It’s these cross-cultural connections that often intrigue me. I’ve questioned the theme of a day of the dead style celebration that spans from Mexico, to Taiwan, to England. Dragons span cultural barriers; therefore they represent some grain of truth. Could dragons have really existed? Maybe.

<img="dragon logo, author Kandi J Wyatt">

Dragons in Legends

From King Arthur to Beowolf to St. George and the Dragon legends tell of dragons and people. Just as dragons span cultures, their tales span countries. The website draconika has a list of legends from England, France, Austria, Japan, and others. The Week lists legends from India, Greece, Babylon, Australia, and Peru. However, generally where there are legends, there’s a grain of truth.

What really inspired the story of Daniel killing the dragon god of Babylon or St. George slaying a dragon? Were there creatures that our dragon tales come from? Over the course of the next few months, I’ll explore these and more.

<img="dragon logo, author Kandi J Wyatt">

Dinosaurs: Dragons in disguise?

The fossil records show creatures of varying sizes some with bird-like qualities some without. Kids have been fascinated with them ever since the first skeleton was constructed in New Jersey.  The question remains, could dinosaurs really be dragons?

With their large build, their lizard-like body, and some with the ability to fly, just maybe some dinosaurs were dragons. I’ll delve more deeply into this theory in a couple of months.

<img="dragon logo, author Kandi J Wyatt">

Fire-breathing Dragons

One of the issues that seem to make people think dragons couldn’t have existed is the claim that they blew fire. However, as we’ll explore in more detail later, other animals have many of the traits given to dragons, including fire.

Are you excited to explore more about the possibility of dragons existing? Every second Monday, I’ll delve deeper into this question. Next month, I’ll look into the Celtic dragons. In the meantime, enjoy a nice dragon ride by reading your favorite dragon fantasy, or explore Dragon’s Future or Uprooted if you haven’t read either of them already.

Absolutely Amazing Fantasy Book Cover and Giveaway https://kandijwyatt.com/absolutely-amazing-fantasy-book-cover-and-giveaway/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=absolutely-amazing-fantasy-book-cover-and-giveaway Mon, 28 Nov 2016 10:25:24 +0000 http://kandijwyatt.com/?p=3650 I am so excited! I have the  privilege of sharing with you the cover to my latest book in the Dragon Courage series! It’s probably one of my favorite covers. Since this is book five and has many of the characters from the rest of the series, plus some new ones, I had better introduce you to them.

Characters of Dragon Courage

Ruskya was first introduced in book 1. He’s the blond, skinny, shy guy that gains the courage to fight the Turquoise dragon rider, Kyanos. Wyeth is his small dragon. Both Ruskya and Wyeth are often taken for granted due to their size. People underestimate them. They both have learned how to take advantage of their stature and find ways to make up for their disadvantages.

Ardyn was born in the epilogue of Dragon’s Future. He’s the little boy in book two that pesters Braidyn to let him go visit Cerulean and Duskya. In book three, he insists in understanding the ways of the El’shad’n. Now, he’s grown up. He’s not out on his own, but he’s discovered he loves braiding leather and making art. Unfortunately, his dad doesn’t see it as art but as defying tradition. Ardyn and Ruskya fight over the littlest things. Ruskya says it best:

“The areas I find the hardest to accept in me are the areas that I pick at Ardyn the most.”

Kyn, once Ruskya’s youngling, has grown up in Three Spans Canyon. He has kept his ties with his own family, the merchant in Woolpren. Aislin’s blessing continues to make Kyn the frithwyn, or peace friend. He seeks peace wherever he goes. Seeing his former trainer at odds with his oldest son hurts. Can a strange dream be the way to mend the rift between father and son?

Blurb for Dragon’s Posterity

Is there really a right way to braid leather? Ruskya doesn’t know anymore. Is it worth fighting over? Twenty-one winters ago, he was ready to take on the turquoise dragon rider, but now he fears facing his oldest son.

Kyn, Ruskya’s youngling, wonders if he’s going crazy when an image begins haunting his dreams. Soon, he realizes it may be the key to helping not only Ruskya and his son Ardyn, but all younglings and their trainers as they adjust to growing up.

Will Kyn be able to help Ruskya, Ardyn, and the other young riders? Follow your favorite characters from the exciting Dragon Courage series as they empower the next generation and give dragons to their posterity.

With this cover reveal, I’m giving away a complete eBook set of the Dragons Courage series, a purple dragon pin, and another dragon rider book, Elodia’s Dragon. All you have to do is enter here. You can enter at least once a day until Sunday, December 4. I’ll notify the winner a week from today.

Dragon’s Future is One-year-old: Time for a Sale https://kandijwyatt.com/dragons-future-is-one-year-old-time-for-a-sale/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=dragons-future-is-one-year-old-time-for-a-sale Sun, 21 Aug 2016 23:41:07 +0000 http://kandijwyatt.com/?p=2554 Believe it or not, it’s actually been a year since Dragon’s Future released. I’ve learned a lot over the course of the year. I’ve seen two more books join the Dragon Courage series and a stand alone Christian Historical Fiction was added to my author bookshelf. I went from being published by a publisher to completely Indie published. I’ve gained a ton of friends and fans. It’s been a wonderful year.

WIN_20160819_14_26_51_ProAfter all the excitement of opening Dragon’s Future, the other books have received varying degrees of welcome. On Friday, I opened my fifth book from Createspace. Dragon’s Cure joined the Dragon Courage series. This reception was slightly different. First off, it was only one book. It was my proof book to okay publishing it on Amazon. Secondly, it came in the mail and my husband picked it up. All the others have gone to our mailing address and I’ve either opened them at my parents’ home or gathered them together and brought them home for opening with the video camera rolling. My husband crept up the stairs and showed me a box. “Is this what I think it is?” he asked as he snuck back downstairs. I bolted from chair and ran to get it. He proceeded to play keep-away from me with the boys! Once I finally was handed the box, I eagerly ripped it open. I examined the spine first. At a casual glance, I thought I was going to have to redo it. Then I realized it was just the shadow of the box. Next, I read through the back cover. Finally, I turned it over to the front. After admiring the cover, I opened it to make sure the table of contents matched and the page numbers were all there. Once satisfied it looked right, I handed it to my husband to review. With his vote of approval, I hit submit to amazon. The official release date is Tuesday, August 23. That’s when you’ll see more information about Dragon’s Cure and its party.

In the meantime, as a celebration, we’re having a sale all week long. Yes, you heard correctly. All the Dragon Courage books are on sale. Books 1-3 are available on Kindle for only 99 cents. My birthday present this year is the release of Dragon’s Revenge, book 3 in the Dragon Courage series. I am so excited to present to you this addition to the series. In book 1 we followed Ruskya and Duskya as they brought a future to their dragon colony. We met a young boy by the name of Braidyn and Ruskya’s youngling, Kyn. In book 2 Braidyn had grown up and needed to find his way in the world. He travels after eggnappers and finds the El’Shad’n, a nomadic dragon colony. In the process he learns about his dragon’s history and finds a place where he belongs. Book 3 takes Kyn, now grown up, on a journey.

Dragon's Revenge Cover

The book starts at Braidyn’s wedding. Kyn then travels across the inland sea to the town of Oreya where he meets up with Ben’hyamene. The two of them meet a rider from a land to the west called the Carr. Ben’hyamene and Kyn struggle with culture shock as they try to comprehend wild dragons! In the process, they discover a war between dragons and humans has been waging for over four hundred years! To bring peace to the land, both humans and dragons will have to put aside revenge.

“I enjoyed the previous two books in the series, but I LOVED this one.” ~Goodreads 5 Star Review for Dragon’s Revenge

To celebrate I will be hosting a live Q&A on my Facebook page this Saturday, April 9 from 1:30-2:30 Pacific/4:30-5:30 Eastern. We’ll have giveaways of fun things like travel mugs, coffee/tea mugs, and of course signed copies of the books!

Dragon’s Revenge is full of tea, friends, dragons, and adventure. Check it out now on Amazon or Barnes & Noble.

Another Train, Another Station https://kandijwyatt.com/another-train-another-station/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=another-train-another-station Sun, 21 Feb 2016 11:00:00 +0000 https://kandijwyatt.wordpress.com/?p=831 This story first appeared on my deviant art account. I wrote it for a contest which required a steampunk theme and a dragon. I thought it would be a great way to start off the week.

Well, another train, another station, again. Liz, when will we ever stop traveling?” Wy asked around the satchel he held in his mouth.

Go ahead and set it down,” the slender girl said with a sigh, motioning to the satchel. “It was your fault, again.”

Her dark eyes glared at him. For the thousandth time he wondered what exactly she saw. Placing the satchel down, he leaned back against the metal post of the station wall and examined himself. He wasn’t bad looking for a wyvrn. Sure, he was a bit small, but his rusty orange color compensated for that fact. Being small also made him fast and agile in flight. That had gotten them into trouble before, too.

Wipe the frown off your snout, Wy,” Liz said, setting her own satchel beside his little one and adjusting her small top hat. “You’re much more adorable without it.”

You think I’m adorable?” Wy inquired with a grin. “That may make up for blaming me for being here.”

Well, it was your fault,” she replied, her face twisting with a grimace.

Wy didn’t reply. He didn’t want to think of last night and the reason they were standing in another train station.

Where would you be without me?” he said, trying to appeal to her better side.

I’d be back on Caladyn peacefully running my linguistics consultation business.” She shot back, too quickly for Wy’s tastes.

You’d be bored, though. Admit it,” he said. “Without my help you wouldn’t have the ambassadors, politicians, and high-end clientele.”

Right, but without them and without you, I’d not be here right now,” she repeated.

Wy frowned. “It was an accident.”

I know.” Liz placed a hand on Wy’s head and began rubbing it. “Don’t mind me. I’m always in a bad mood when we have to move. Besides, I didn’t care for their stuffy attitudes. They needed some livening up.”

Wy grinned, showing his teeth. “That they did.”

The two fell into a companionable silence, as they waited for the next train. The sounds of steam emitting from the engines as they idled filled the area. Condensation covered the glass walls and ceiling, giving the building a feeling of a greenhouse more than a train station. Wy closed his eyes and soaked in the heat.

It really had been his fault this time, but he was right in saying that Liz wouldn’t be where she was today as a linguistics consultant without him either. His innate ability with languages had come in handy on more than one occasion, and Liz had been able to advertise linguistic help in any language on the planet. When he had first found her ten years ago, she was barely making ends meet. Now, she could afford the nice gray suits that she loved and as many top hats as she wanted. Of course, the constant moving, limited what she could carry, but she had the means to purchase new ones at the next stop.

They had entertained ambassadors, lowly relatives, judges, plaintiffs, and lawyers since Wy had joined up with Liz. Many were simple cases of translating legal briefs; a few were more intricate than that. Once Liz negotiated the peace treaty between two warring gangs in the city of Caladyn. Wy paused in his thoughts, picking up a stray scent. His nose wiggled. Finally, he placed it—an old sandwich dropped by an inattentive traveler. His mind traveled back to Caladyn. It was a nice place to be, but when he had disregarded the cultural norms of the Black Hawks—. He let the thought hang in mid-air. He didn’t want to remember. That was the first train station they had seen. They couldn’t find it fast enough to suit the mayor of Caladyn or the warring gangs either. The gangs found unity in kicking Liz and Wy out of town and then wrecking havoc on the mayor’s house as well.

That had been the first of many slip ups Wy had instigated. Each one leading to another train and another station. This latest fiasco had occurred just the night before. Liz had decided to welcome her clients, Ambassadors Beryl and Clark, to her home for a meal. The two ambassadors had hired Liz to help them translate some laws into the language of their constituents. The evening was going to be a straight forward work session. It would have been straight forward if it hadn’t been for Wy.

Wy sighed as he remembered.

Quit fuming.” Liz’s voice broke into his revere. “Do you want to start a fire here, as well?”

I can’t.” Wy snorted, purposefully blowing out smoke from his nostrils.

At Liz’s questioning glance, Wy tapped his foot against the post behind him. A metallic ringing filled the air as his claw scraped the pole. A spark dropped down onto the paving stones and fizzled out as if to prove his point.

Wy’s face lit up. “Now there’s an idea! Make our next home like this.”

A train station?” Liz’s voice held no enthusiasm.

No, out of metal!”

Liz snorted, a very unladylike sound, and the two fell back into their own thoughts.

It wasn’t a bad idea,” Wy thought sourly.

The idea had merit. If their home had been made out of metal, they would still be sitting there with the ambassadors. As it was, the house had been made out of wood, and they were standing in the station.

The evening had started out alright. Liz and Wy sat down with the ambassadors to work. The two men seemed a little nervous to have a wyvrn standing at their knees, but adjusted somewhat as the evening wore on. Things didn’t go south until hunger settled over the group. Liz had planned a barbecue, but hadn’t checked her fuel supply. Red juices still poured from the meat when the fuel ran out. The gas lamps had been on for about a half hour by then. Wy knew that had been the main fault, the gas lines to the house, not him. Seeing Liz’s predicament of a half cooked meal, Wy decided to help by roasting the meat for them. How was he to know that the gas lamp for the porch had let off enough gas to cause a problem. His flame met with the extra gas and created an explosive evening. The ambassadors left in a huff with singed robes. Shortly after they left, the telephone rang and the operator put the mayor on the phone saying they needed to catch the next train out of town.

A squeal of metal and a hiss of steam, brought Wy out of his revere. Liz reached down and picked up her satchel with a shrug and a smile, as if to say all was forgiven. Wy grinned back and picked up his satchel in his mouth. With a final adjustment of her top hat, Liz headed off toward the train. Wy followed, wondering if there was yet another train and another station in their future. For now, he was content to stay with Liz as long as she would have him.
