If you have dragon lovers on your list, look no further. No matter their age, I have ideas for you. I even have ideas for the romance lover on your list.

Dragon lover under 8 years old

This could be the hardest one to find, but here are some dragon ideas for those younger dragon lovers.

img="gift ideas for dragon lovers under 8 years old"

*Tea for Dragons–this fun book has kids wondering what they’d serve a dragon if it came for tea.

*Dragon Warmies–This blue dragon is unique as far as stuffed animals go. It can be warmed up or work as an ice pack. It also has a soothing lavender scent added.

*Dragon Blanket–Who doesn’t love to cuddle up in a warm blanket? It’s even better when it encourages you to be more than meets the eye!

*Dragon t-shirt–Even the youngest dragon lovers dream of being a dragon rider. This t-shirt inspires the dream.

    Dragon lover ages 8-12

As your child grows, so does their ability to enjoy books and toys. This age group has a few more fun things that someone even older may enjoy as well.

img="Gifts for 8-12 year old dragon lovers"

*I have several books that a child this age will love. Dragon’s Future introduces the next generation to dragon riders, while The Myth Coast Adventures trilogy shows everyday kids interacting with mythical creatures including dragons, unicorn, Bigfoot, brownies, and fairies.

*Dragon plushies are a hit with this age group. Tee Turtle has multiple ones to choose from. I picked the black one and the reversible one that goes from dragon to unicorn.

    * All ages love cuddling up in a blanket. This one adds a hood and showcases a beautiful dragon.

*By 8 years old, children can start to enjoy crafts. These paper dragons are a wonderful way to encourage their creativitiy.

*Another way to encourage your child’s creativity is with action figures. This dragon will inspire stories. If you don’t like the lava dragon, there are other options available as well.

Dragon lovers over 12 years old

This age group includes not only your kids but you as well. The books are young adult, and the other ideas are more fragile.

img="gift ideas for dragon lovers over 12 years old"

*Four Stars over Ardatz: Sovereigns is an epic fantasy with dragons. The first six books follow Hest, a young stable hand who’d rather be with horses than humans, but when a marvelous stallion walks into his stable, he’s taken as squire to the captain of the royal guard of the neighboring kingdom. When he rescues a baby dragon, his life takes a drastic change. Books 7 and 8 follow the original dragon king of Muintir. An addicting series.

*While you read, you’ll want something to warm you up. Some tea or coffee will work. Then you’ll need something to put it in. This fun mug shares with the world your love of dragons and books.

*Even older kids and adults will like this dragon action figure. There are six different kinds to choose from.

*Curling up with a good book means a comfy blanket as well. This dragon one will be sure to please.

*As you grow older, you can handle these gorgeous acrylic dragons, and appreciate the gems that are inside of them. I have four or five. A student bought a ton and then thought of me and allowed me to have my pick! They’re pretty, and if you don’t want a full dragon, you can ask for a key chain, and she may be able to accommodate you.

    Sweet romance lovers

Do you have someone who loves sweet romance? Maybe your mom? What do you get her? Here are a few ideas.

    img="gifts for sweet romance lovers"

*These two books are sweet romance with a twist. They each retell a Bible story but in a unique different setting. Instead of the King James language, we have a medieval servant who longs for someone to recognize her. The other is set in a slight steampunk setting. Think Howl’s Moving Castle or Castle in the Sky.

*Like those over 12, a romance lover will enjoy a mug of something hot. This one will encourage her to realize that she’s enough.

*Chocolate’s another great hit! Chocolove is one of my favorites. I can pick it up in my local market. You may be able to. If not, check out their site to find a store near you. One of the fun things about Chocolove is they have poems inside the wrapper. My latest, Ruby chocolate, had a Shakespeare sonnet.

    Book Info

    What’s the hype?

If achieving your dreams consumed your very self, would you pay that price?

Hest’s titles seen to constantly multiply—dragon rider, warrior, husband, king—and he’s working hard to live up to them all, even if each one seems to require more from him than the last. Between suffering beggars, jealous nobles, and a gang of violent thieves plaguing the capital, he can hardly find time to spend with his wife, let alone his dragon. And while he sleeps, one dark dream is repeating–an old enemy, come to destroy everything he loves.

Fearing what feels like a prophecy, Hest tries to protect his new wife, but his attempts only alienate her. He seeks comfort in the bond with his dragon, but even then he must be vigilant against losing himself in it and taking on the draconic form that terrifies his people and steals his mind. Then the unthinkable happens: he and Usheen are shot out of the sky, captured and brought to face powers far beyond his imagining.

Hest will do what it takes to keep his family and his kingdom safe, but at what cost? Will there be anything left of him when it is over?

    Info about Strayblood:

img="Strayblood, book 2 in Draev Guardians by E. E. Rawls"

“I am the rescuer of the weak. The hope of those who have none. And the executioner of vempar kind. I am the White Ghost—and your worst nightmare.”

With the events of the Festival Duel over, Cyrus wants to focus on training her Ability with metal. But trouble soon comes in the form of a shapeshifter: the White Ghost, who’s determined to exterminate all vempar kind, and he’s seeking the power of the Swan Princess in order to carry out his plan.

Seriously, why can’t people just leave Cyrus alone? She doesn’t want to be the Swan, some reborn hero from legend! She just wants to be with her friends and train to become a Draev Guardian. Is that too much to ask for?

Apparently, it is. The Oracle, who happens to be a faeryn child, can lead the Ghost right to her—and the Impure Nights, as well. Harlow must keep the Oracle safe, but with the Academy’s yearly Hunters Race coming up, things get even more complicated. The Scourgeblood in Aken’s veins is awakening, and to face the powerful shapeshifter, Cyrus’s fellow Draevs-in-training may have to pay the ultimate price…

New Supervillain Rehabilitation Project https://kandijwyatt.com/new-supervillain-rehabilitation-project/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=new-supervillain-rehabilitation-project Mon, 27 Sep 2021 14:01:43 +0000 http://kandijwyatt.com/?p=8602 Have you haver found a book that you wanted to absorb yourself into that world? You couldn’t get enough of it and hoped the author would keep writing more? The Supervillain Rehabilitation Project world by H. L. Burke is one of those for me. I fell in love with her characters and have picked up every book she’s written here. Her newest venture is a young adult spin off where the main characters from the SRP have retired from superhero work and now run a camp for troubled teens.

In book 1, Power On, there are three teens who join, but Jake is really the first. I was able to sit down and interview him.

    Interview with Jake

    Introduce yourself!

    Jake by Coryn Burke

Jake: Hey, I’m Jake. Um, I’m sixteen. I’ve been working with my uncle’s supervillain gang for a few years now, but I recently got caught, and now they’ve got me at some sort of lame reform camp for superpowered kids.

Where were you born and where do you call home?

Jake: I was born in California, but I’ve moved around a lot. The Sand Fox gang has multiple lairs and hideouts all over the southwest. We generally don’t stay in one place for too long. We also needed to be able to pack up and leave at a moment’s notice so sometimes we’d be in sleeping bags in the back of my uncle’s truck or something like that.
At camp it’s kind of weird, always being in the same bed every night. It’s kind of a nice break, I guess.

It’s Saturday at noon. What are you probably doing?

Jake: A video game or maybe a comic book and snacks. I got pulled out of school when I was eleven to work with my uncle’s gang, so my reading is kind of rusty. Prism has started getting my graphic novel versions of books so that I can get my reading level up again.

How would you spend a night out?

Jake: Nights are the best time for supervillainy, so I spend a lot of them working and sleep in the day. I guess if I could go do whatever I’d want I’d maybe want to go to a movie or something. I like science fiction.

What is one strong memory that has stuck with you from childhood?

Jake: When my brother and I were too young to work with the gang, we lived at our great aunt’s house. She didn’t care what we got up to as long as we didn’t make too much of a mess inside, so we roamed around the empty lot behind her house. We’d dig holes and build forts. It was pretty awesome. One night she forgot to check that we’d come in and we stayed out way past dark. Me and my brother just hung out, talking, in our fort. She eventually realized we were missing and came screaming for us to get inside and take showers, but while it lasted it was pretty cool.

    Do you have a secret?

Jake (snorts): If I did I certainly wouldn’t tell you about it. Or anyone for that matter. (shuffles his feet) Fade and Prism keep finding out things though. I don’t know how they keep doing that.

Who are the people you’re closest to?

Jake: Meh, I don’t know. I mean, being close to people is risky. Uncle always says you shouldn’t have ties you aren’t willing to cut. I guess my brother is the exception, and even if the gang isn’t close, we all look out for each other. Now that I’m here at Camp Sable, Prism really wants me to be friends with the other kids. I don’t need friends, but it does get kind of lonely sometimes.

    About the book

Jake’s family ties have turned to cuffs.

Born with the ability to fragment his body at a molecular level, Jake Lucas has devoted his life to his uncle’s supervillain gang. When he’s captured by superheroes, he’s certain his life is over at only sixteen.

To Jake’s surprise, he doesn’t end up in prison but at Camp Sable: an intervention project for at-risk super powered teens. Jake’s not interested in rehabilitation. As far as he’s concerned, the camp mentors are just a barrier between him and his true family, the Sand Fox gang.

Forced to work alongside the likewise screwed up duo of fire-powered Marco and electricity manipulator Laleh, Jake waits for the perfect escape opportunity. Having friends and the chance at a real family is more appealing than Jake originally thought, but going soft can cost a supervillain his life. Jake soon finds the forces fighting to control his life threatening to tear him apart.

Will Jake choose to remain the villain his uncle made him, or become the hero his new friends think he can be?

    About the author

    H. L. Burke has written more books than she can count—because she’s written a lot of books, not just because she can’t count very high.

Easily distracted by shinies, she has published in many subgenres including fantasy romance, Steampunk, and superhero, and always creates story worlds with snark, feels, and wonder.

Married to her high school crush, she spends her time writing, spoiling her cat, and supervising her two supervillains in training (aka her precocious daughters).

An Oregon native, she wilts without trees and doesn’t mind the rain. She is a fan of delicious flavor, a follower of the Light, and a believer in happily ever after.

You can find her and her dragon Theodore on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Goodreads, her website, and Amazon.

Interview with Author S. T. Sanchez https://kandijwyatt.com/interview-with-s-t-sanchez/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=interview-with-s-t-sanchez Fri, 12 Jul 2019 18:30:59 +0000 http://kandijwyatt.com/?p=7834 A while back I had the privilege of being featured on S. T. Sanchez’s blog in an author interview. It was fun, and I was surprised at the amount of people who shared the post and really enjoyed it. Today, it’s my pleasure to reciprocate and introduce you to author S. T. Sanchez.

Interview questions for author S. T. Sanchez

If I ever get out to Dallas to visit my friend, what’s a place I absolutely have to visit?

That’s a tough one. Dallas has so many amazing things to offer, especially when it comes to restaurants. Probably my favorite place to go is an Italian place in Allen, a suburb just north of Dallas. It has fantastic food, and I might be a little bias since I met my husband there.  If you ever go, you must order the Stuffed Mushrooms and Chicken Murphy. There is nothing better.

How would you describe your writing to a newbie?

I write in 3rd POV, but I am toying with the idea of doing a novel in 1st person. I love to write fantasy although I have an idea for a drama and an action adventure, but as much as I would love to jump into the project I have decided to finish the two series I currently have published first.

What advice do you have for aspiring authors?

Keep writing. Have more than Mom and Dad read your books. Join writing groups and have someone who doesn’t know you read your works. Don’t get discouraged by bad feedback. Look at it and see if it’s valid and then make changes.  Don’t be afraid of rewrites.

What made you decide to start a blog?

Honestly, at first because that’s the advice new authors are given. It’s a way to attract new readers. Now I really enjoy getting to know other authors and finding new stories to read that I might not have found before.

How do you get feedback for your books? Do you have beta readers?

If you don’t have beta readers, I think that you are really putting yourself at a disadvantage. My betas are my salvation. Having several sets of eyes on a draft is crucial. They catch things I don’t see. Help me keep my work consistent and let me know when I am heading in the wrong direction.

Beta readers can be hard to find. A lot of people have a hard time telling someone what’s wrong. It’s easier to just say everything was great. I only have a small handful of readers who will really dig in and find all my faults.  It can be a little tough to hear at times, some can be a little harsh, but I know my books are better because of them.

What inspired you to write The Portal Keeper?

I have a YA Vampire Trilogy entitled the Sunwalker Trilogy. I have always been fascinated with vampires. However my kids are still on the younger side, and the series is a little bit too intense for them.  My son wanted me to write a story with a dragon in it. I had been toying with the idea of writing a novel with a mystical portal and just jumped in from there.

Why do you think The Portal Keeper was so easy to write?

I think the instant feedback made this novel easier to write. On my other projects no one sees any of it until I have completed the first draft, but with The Portal Keeper my kids were too excited that I was writing something that they would be able to read. They became my instant beta readers, constantly hounding me to finish the next chapter. This book became our bedtime story. Their anticipation and excitement was catching and pushed me to write more.

    Tell us about your book

The Portal Keeper is a story of a boy, Ajax, who is tasked with guarding a magical portal. No one who has entered the portal has ever returned. The prince comes to visit and through an accident ends up falling through the portal. Ajax must determine if he should follow after him possibly never coming home again, or risk the wrath of the king. It’s a story about friendship, bravery, and a little bit of magic.

That sounds really good. What plans do you have for the future in terms of writing books?

I am finishing up my young adult vampire series, and I just finished my first draft. I also just finished the first draft to the sequel of the portal keeper. I have a half a dozen other stories that are a few chapters in, and I jump to them from time to time when I need a break. But my current focus is to finish up my last book in the vampire series and complete The Keeper Chronicles before I dive too far into the other projects.

You can find The Portal Keeper on amazon. It sounds really intriguing.

The amazon page says: If you like Brandon Mull, you’ll love The Portal Keeper!

She had me at Brandon Mull! I loved The Beyonders series.

Without further ado, let’s welcome author Kendra E. Ardnek.

When doing something, it’s always good to know why you’re doing it. And the more it affects your life, the bigger a why you need.

Writing is a huge part of my life, so, of course, I have a pretty big, “why.” Multiple “why’s,” in fact. Shall we begin?

    To explore What-if’s.

Almost every one of my books begins with that question. What if a princess were to have been accidentally gifted with swordplay by her Fairy Godmother? What if a piece of jewelry could make imagination real? What if I were to climb into the shower, close my eyes, and open them to find myself standing under a waterfall in a fantasy world? My latest project has been “What if I mashed up every Austen novel with a fairy tale in a high fantasy world” and I’ve been loving every step of it.

To explore relationships and the human psyche.

I’m all about the people. A great concept is all well and good, but if it isn’t driven by a cast of complicated characters and the dynamic relationships between them, well … what’s the point? Whether I’m exploring sibling relationships, friendships, romantic interests, or even marriages, I’m all here for it. My personal favorite are twins. And I also have a small obsession with exploring what womanhood means, which is one reason that I’m constantly giving my girls swords. And NOT giving my girls swords. Just depends on whether or not I think they need one.

To make people laugh and forget their troubles.

Life is droll. Sometimes, you just need fiction to make you forget your troubles. So I write escapist fiction. Let you plunge into an exciting new world with plenty of humor.

    To make people think.

Escapist fiction isn’t worth it unless you come out of it with tools to face life again. So I always make sure that there is meaning in the story. I tackle many subjects of varying depths, and while some of my short stories are popcorn, I can assure you that you’re going to come out of my books having felt a new point of view and equipped with new tools for life.

Because, apparently, it’s the socially acceptable thing to do with the stories in your head. You know, as opposed to kidnapping people and making them act it out. I have stories to share, and share them I will.

Kendra E. Ardnek is the coordinator of this indie e-con. She has put the whole thing together. You can find more about her on her blog.

As for the indie e-con, follow the scavenger hunt (see the end of this post for more info) and go to the facebook author meet-n-greet later today.

Yep, even as a kid it was a toss up between Christmas and Easter. I loved the new dress, Sunday dinner, and the songs that went with Easter. It probably didn’t hurt that it was right around my birthday as well.

As an adult, Easter was the one holiday our family made a priority of with specific traditions. Not every year, but most years, there was a Good Friday service with the main celebration on Sunday. A trip up the mountain to Camp Fircroft started the day with sunrise service at 7 am followed by breakfast. Then down the mountain back to church for Sunday School and church. After church, a potluck at a friend’s house usually lasted until around 5 at night. It made for a long day, but a joyful day.

However, somewhere along the line, I realized I wasn’t celebrating Easter. We were celebrating Resurrection Sunday. I think it started with the phrase, “He is risen!” and the response, “He is risen, indeed!” I realized there were no bunnies or Easter baskets in our celebrations. Occasionally, there were eggs, but for the most part, we celebrated the resurrection of our Lord.

    A different focus

Easter seems to bring to mind eggs, bunnies, and chicks with pastel colors, but Resurrection Sunday focuses on the empty tomb–the joy of the apostles and women who had had their hopes dashed on Good Friday, and the victory over death that Christ brings.

img="sunrise service"Resurrection Sunday may have some of the same elements of Easter, but it focuses instead on the events that happened all those years ago. The symbols of the cross and the empty tomb come into sharp contrast.

    A different feel

Easter is a day in time to spend with family and friends. It’s the dressing up, the candy, and the fun but it’s done and over with in one day. Resurrection Sunday is one day, but the feeling and the meaning behind it last throughout the day, the week, the month, and into those tough times that come along. I may not always remember the feeling of Resurrection Sunday, but the significance of that day resonates throughout my year.

The connection between Good Friday and Resurrection Sunday tend to be stronger. Our hopes on Good Friday are dashed. Jesus is in the grave. The One who was to have saved the world, the Healer, Teacher, and Friend is gone. We feel the pain Peter felt as he wept bitterly. We understand Mary and John’s anguish as they stand at the foot of the cross. But then, Sunday! We burst out in song as we realize that all hope is not lost. Jesus rose again. He’s not dead! This is the joy that floods us and sustains us back to work on Monday. We know He’s alive and there with us.img="Resurrection Sunday choir"

So which do you celebrate? Why? Are you more into the bunnies and candy or the meaning behind the week?

    img="To Save a Race synopsis"

    The Book:

I know, if you’ve been following me for any length of time, you’ve heard about To Save a Race. However, there are those who’ve not heard; so I’ll share anyway.

    The Setting:

“Noise filled the city. Vendors hawked their wares, while rumbling motorcars competed with horse drawn carriages for room on the narrow streets. People rushed along the sidewalks, anxious to finish their business and be home before the sun’s protective light faded. A tall, muscular man moved gracefully among them all, swinging his cane as he walked. His dark hair soaked up the sunlight while his ebony eyes took in his surroundings with an easy nonchalance. A stray noise caught his attention and he spotted a disheveled man backed up against a brick wall. Two burly men advanced on the smaller one, their quarry’s green eyes darting like a hart caught in the cross hairs of the hunter.”

Nubbikford isn’t the safest place for the average citizen to wander, especially at night, but like most cities, it has its own pleasant places.

“A cough brought her out of her reflections, quickly followed by another that wracked her body. The smell of coal, oil and dust filled the air. Arianna didn’t have to look up to know they were passing the factories. Nubbikford boasted two main industries: canvas and automobiles. The buildings faced each other across the crowded thoroughfare, and seemed to compete to see who could belch the most noxious fumes into the atmosphere. Arianna felt sorry for the workers who endured the foul smells day in and day out. She knew many of them were Tantulians and had no say in their situations. She’d never met one, but any time she’d complained about chores, Uncle Marcos had always told her to be thankful she wasn’t a Tantulian. She shifted in her seat.

Kenden smoothly turned a corner. “It’s not much further. We’ll be there shortly.”

Arianna smiled her thanks and peered ahead, waiting for that first glimpse. She hadn’t been to the castle often, but occasionally Uncle Marcos had taken her with him when she was little. She remembered the thrill that would soar through her as they rounded the curve and the castle loomed at the top of the hill.”

    The Synopsis:

When Duke Callon divorces his wife and decides on an uncanny way of choosing his next duchess, Arianna’s left with little choice. Faced with the intricacies of politics, Arianna struggles to find her place. Just as she thinks she has her footing, a decree, issued with the blessing of her husband, calls for the extermination of her entire race.

A young innocent girl, a capricious duke, and a decree that will change everything. What will it take to save a race?

    The Giveaway:

With the steampunk vibe of the book, I wanted to find something that would go along with that. So, I contacted a local artist I know who does wonderful jewelry and asked if she had anything already made. Although she didn’t have anything ready, she eagerly went to her workshop and made up four necklaces for me to choose from. The butterfly caught my attention right away.

    First and Second Place:

For first and second place, I’m giving away ebook copies of To Save a Race. I have mobi which is what Kindle uses, epub–perfect for iTunes–and pdf for those who just use the computer.

    Excerpt

Otis spent the day putting Dr. Benson’s office back in order. He was a very good doctor, but not at all good at organizing or keeping things organized. Otis often wondered how Dr. Benson survived before he started helping.

He finished what he could and headed to the stage office. As usual, it was a little late.

Two men stepped off the stage, and Otis looked at first one, then the other. Which one was the lawyer? One was rotund and older and the other thin, wiry, and looked to be a little older than him.

    “Mr. Parker?” Otis asked.

The thin, wiry man with slicked down, dark-brown hair looked his way, smiled slightly, and held out his hand. “You must be the fortunate Otis Miller.”

Otis nodded and winced inwardly at his tight grip. “I am.”

“Nice to meet you. Is there a respectable sleeping establishment around here?”

“You have a couple of choices,” he answered. “There is a boarding house, a small hotel, or the family who raised me since Pa died offered to house you if you’d like. It is out of town on a ranch, so I wasn’t sure which you would prefer.”

“I think I would prefer the boarding house. No offense to you or your family.”

Otis smiled. “None taken. I’ll take your bag and we can go.”

“Thank you. When can we meet to go over the inheritance? Miss Miller did mention it to you, correct?”

They walked and talked at the same time. “Yes, she did. I’m sure you are tired, so tomorrow morning will be fine.”

He nodded. “Thank you. That is extremely considerate of you. And with it being a Saturday tomorrow, Miss Miller can join us if you would like.”

“Can my brothers and sisters come, too, if they want? And Mr. Brookings?”

    “Of course.”

Otis paused at the walkway to the boarding house. “Is this respectable enough?”

He looked it over. “For a two-bit cowtown, yes.”
